WHERE'S THE DRAMA?

There's an email doing the rounds that offers an app that takes all the work out of writing romance novels. If you read the blurb, you could be excused for thinking that the “Kindle Romance Idea Generator” could work for screenplays as well as romance novels. I’m serious. The sales page says: “Writing a Romance Novel Can Mean a Lot of Cash!” and it helpfully points out that “Ideas are the lifeblood of any good book”, but the problem is “ideas are hard to come by.”

Hmm... Writing a Screenplay Can Also Mean a Lot of Cash!  And obviously ideas are hard to come by.

Imagine: with one press of a button you get a full description of a viable revenge story, featuring a washed-up, ex-movie-femme-fatale, hell-bent on finding and settling an old score with her old, elementary-school Principal. The sample profile gives such useful information as, “the protagonist hates the smell of mustard,” and “her favorite hobbies include crafts and pinochle.”

For a small, extra fee you also get a profile of the the love-interest and the antagonist (male or female)  and their characteristics.  The sample description includes the fact that she/he has eyes like indigo prayers and his/her hair is the ruddy auburn of an autumn picnic; sand of course, he/she is mad on mustard, pinochle and model-ship building, not necessarily in that order.

Who knew that pinochle could be a source of compelling drama!

The upgraded app also gives you clues as to possible conflicts and complications in whatever scenario takes your fancy. One possible plot line has the heroine going to a trendy night club, after which she has a one-night stand with a man she met on the dance floor. She didn’t expect to meet him again, but it turns out he’s the loan officer handling the refinancing of her home, which complicates what looked to be a blossoming relationship, and drives a wedge between her and her lover of three years. Sigh.

If I were writing the story, I’d probably make her partner the head of a ketchup factory, and she can't abide the smell of ketchup, so he opens a mustard factory to try to win her back, but loses everything due to a world-wide mustard glut. I’d pitch it as a modern-day Romeo and Juliet…two condiment-crossed lovers, torn apart by a series of pickles. But only if I was using the app.

Alternatively, you could just sign up for a LET'S DO SKYPE session.

Unfortunately, a prerequisite is that YOU have some ideas of your own.

SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED, OR YOU PAY NOTHING.

LET'S DO SKYPE - like LET'S DO LUNCH - is a story exploration situation. Stoneking will not read your screenplay. You will pitch the basic idea and tell him the basic story and he will ask questions and make comments concerning the story and its characters, alerting you to its hidden strengths and weaknesses, whilst encouraging and illuminating your own relationship with the characters and themes inherent in the action. In short, your session with Stoneking will propel you back into the process of writing with a renewed vigour and awareness of what is happening textually and sub- textually.

As with Stoneking's LET'S DO LUNCH sessions, LET'S DO SKYPE is guaranteed to satisfy you or your money will be refunded.
