Anthony Quinn's directorial debut and Yul Brenner with hair! are not the least one might say about this 1958 oft-ignored and under-rated epic. A high adventure biopic about Jean Lafitte and the background to the Battle of New Orleans, this is a very workmanlike film with some wonderful scenes featuring Charles Boyer who is superb as the world-weary adventurer Dominique You. Athough Cecil B. DeMille supervised the movie, he should not be blamed for its obvious shortcomings since he was near the end of his life (he died the following year). Anthony Quinn was DeMille?s son-in-law at the time, and he never directed another film.
